Enhancing class instruction by integrating technology preschool through high school.

To better prepare our students for the 21st century, District 70 has adopted a technology initiative that provides the opportunity to put technology into the hands of every child in every classroom. There are Interactive White Boards (Promethean Boards) in most elementary and middle school classrooms. There is a laptop in the hands of every high school student. This environment provides the opportunity for teachers to deliver technology-rich lessons.

    • Easy and efficient access to web based content for both the teacher and the student
    • Web based research
    • Real time information
    • Online collaboration
    • Virtual Classrooms that allow students to manage and communicate information
    • Self-directed learning
    • Distance and distributed learning that expands the classroom
    • Individualized learning with opportunities for problem solving and higher order thinking skills
    • Project based learning within a multi-media environment which promotes information literacy skills

There is a laptop in the hands of every high school student providing a learning environment that is rich in technology. Students have the opportunity to easily access computer based content that reinforces the teaching in the classroom. Students have the capability to view teacher notes, submit lessons online, take tests that can provide immediate feedback, and access Internet links. Work can be saved and students can refer back to teachers' notes and files, not only at school, but at home. Student research can be enhanced as teachers use a program that allows all students to view the same screen as the instructor improving the ability of teachers to guide instruction. With this technology the walls of the traditional classroom no longer exist. Students are able to freely collaborate among classrooms and even throughout the district.

Interactive White Board Lessons can be presented in all facets of multimedia such as, video, sound, still photos, and movable text. Lessons are more engaging for the students as they have opportunities to guide the direction of their own learning.   The boards are interactive. Students can click and drag objects on the board to visually and kinesthetically reinforce their learning. Teachers can use the boards to enhance  teaching of difficult concepts. The board also offers access to the Internet which opens up the walls of a traditional classroom and offers limitless and up to date resources and activities that reinforce core curriculum. Along with the boards, classrooms can use Activotes, a student response system that allows input from all students and can provide teachers and students with immediate feedback that helps guide instruction.
