Participant Code of Conduct and Academic/Attendance Eligibility Standards

Extra-curricular activities are an important part of the high school curriculum but as outlined by Article 1710 of the CHSAA Handbook participation in interscholastic athletics as a part of a school's education program is a privilege not a right. Students wishing to participate are required to meet standards of personal behavior and academic performance, which are rationally related to school purposes. In this regard, the Colorado High School Activities Association and its member schools may exercise the fullest discretion permitted under law.

Certain rules must be established to help insure the health and well being of those students who participate in any extracurricular activity. Individual programs may have their own rules for such things as practice attendance requirements, hair length, dress code, curfew, lettering, etc., however, the following rules will apply to all students who participate in any extra-curricular activity.

Disqualification

Disqualification from participation and loss of letter for violations occurring in season will occur upon self-admission on the part of the student or if a student is caught by his/her parent, coaches/sponsor, other Pueblo School District No. 70 employee(s), or law enforcement for any of the violation listed below. Penalties for violation of these training rules will carry over to the next sport/activity in which a student chooses to participate, regardless of when a violation occurs. Therefore, these training rules are in effect all calendar year, 12 months, and will be carried over into the next school year. Any student who is suspended for violation or rules in not allowed to be on any Pueblo School District No. 70 property during suspension. This includes viewing of the athletic event or activity in which the student would normally be participating.

Hazing/Harassment

Absolutely will not be tolerated (BOE policy).

Alcohol, Drugs, and Inhalants

It shall be violation of the activities training rules for any student participant to possess, use, sell, distribute, or to be under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or any other controlled substances. Drugs shall be defined according to the language of Pueblo School District No. 70 Board Policy. This policy also includes substances that are represented by or to the student to be any such controlled substance or what the student believes to be any such substance. Possessing, using, selling, or distributing non-alcoholic beer and wine products is a violation of these training rules.

Consequences - Alcohol

Off season (including summer months)
The student may practice with the permission of the coach/sponsor, but not compete in a scrimmage or contest with another school for 1/2 of the regularly scheduled contest for that sport/activity.

In season
First 1/3 of season - The student will be disqualified from further particpation in sport/activites/contests for the remainder of that sport season.
Last 2/3 of season - The student will be disqualified from further participation in the sport/activities/contest for the remainder of the season plus 1/2 of the regularly scheduled season contests of the next sport season in which the student participates. Any student caught consuming or possessing alcohol/tobacco a c second time in a school year will be automatically disqualified from participating in sports/activities for the remainder of the school year.

Consequences - Drugs

In season or out of season (includes summer months)
The student is disqualified from all extra-curricular activites for one year (365 days) from date of occurrence as per Pueblo School District No. 70 Board Policy.

Tobacco

It shall be a violation of the activities training rules for any student to possess, smoke, chew, light, inhaled or in any other manner use a tobacco product. "Tobacco" shall include cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, snuff, chewing tobacco and all kinds and forms of tobacco prepared in such manner as to be suitable for chewing, smoking or both. This policy also includes substances that are represented by or to the student to be any such tobacco substance or what the student believes to be any such substance. Possessing or using non-smoking tobacco products, tobacco less chew, and food and/or candy items promoting the use of tobacco is a violation of these training rules.

Consequences - Tobacco

Off season (including summer months)

Extracurricular Activity Eligibility (Policy JJJ)(11-03-04)

All students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities. The student must meet eligibility requirements that are outlined through the state activities agency, CHSAA, and the school facility in which the student participates in the activity. If an activity is not available at the student's school of attendance then the student may choose to participate in that activity at another school within the district or other district in the area. When choosing, the student must pick an alternative school that offers the greatest number of activities in which the student wishes to participate. Each student that chooses to participate in extracurricular activities will receive an activities handbook that outlines all of the eligibility requirements in detail. Fees

Student Identification Card replacement - $5.00
Pueblo Community College (PCC) Identification Badge replacement - $5.00

Middle School Activity/Sport

1st child/1st sport - $50.00
2nd child/2nd sport and each child/sport thereafter - $40.00

High School Activity/Sport

$70.00 per activity/sport, 2nd sport $60.00

Equipment

Any student who fails to turn in equipment for one-sport/activity or who hasnt paid fines from their last sport/activity, will not be allowed to play in a contest or receive any report card until all fines have been paid and/or all equipment has been returned. Also, any revoked letter because of Good Conduct violations will be handled as equipment and /or fines.

Self Admission

If a student comes forward to a coach or administrator, to admit (self-report) a violation of the Good Conduct Rule prior to a finding of guilt by the administration, the student's penalty may be reduced. Any student who has been found to have violated the Good Conduct Rule for reason of arrest or citation, or conduct that is inappropriate or offensive, may result in suspension, dismissal, loss of letter and/or awards, etc.
