Indiviual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP)
Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP)
What is an ICAP?
An Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) is a personalized, multi-year process that helps students explore and plan for their futures. With the support of school counselors, teachers and families, students develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and skills to create meaningful pathways toward postsecondary and workforce readiness.
Why do students complete an ICAP?
Colorado law requires that all students have an ICAP beginning no later than grade 9. The process helps students connect their learning to their interests, understand the relevance of academic choices, and prepare for life after high school—whether that means college, career, military service or other pathways.
How do students complete their ICAP in D70?
Students use the Major Clarity platform to build and maintain their ICAP. Plans are developed by the student with support from school counselors and teachers, beginning no later than grade 9 and revisited on an ongoing basis. The process includes setting goals, tracking progress, exploring careers and aligning coursework with future aspirations.
What does an ICAP include?
• Career interest and personality assessments
• Postsecondary exploration and planning activities
• Academic goal setting and progress monitoring
• Course selection aligned to future goals
• Exploration of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and concurrent enrollment opportunities
• Financial aid awareness and preparation for postsecondary applications
• Reflections and artifacts that demonstrate growth over time
How does the ICAP support students?
The ICAP helps students take ownership of their learning and future planning. It connects academic decisions to real-world goals, encourages conversations with trusted adults, and ensures every student graduates with a clear and viable next step after high school.
