Seal of Biliteracy

The Seal of Biliteracy is a nationally-recognized endorsement awarded to graduating high school seniors who demonstrate proficiency in English and at least one other World Language. Established to celebrate multilingualism, this credential validates a student's linguistic talents on their high school diploma and transcript, showcasing valuable global communication skills to university admissions and future employers.

The Seal of Biliteracy gives students a competitive edge in college admissions and unlocks enhanced career opportunities by formally verifying their bilingual skills. To celebrate this high academic achievement, graduating seniors receive an official certificate, special recognition during graduation ceremonies, and a permanent seal on their diploma.

In order for students to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, they must meet Colorado’s minimum requirements in both English and a second language:

English Proficiency 

• Earn a GPA of 3.0 or higher in English Language Arts coursework AND one of the following:
• SAT Evidence-Based Reading & Writing score of 470 or higher
• AP English Language & Composition or AP English Literature score of 3 or higher
• Scoring 25 or higher on ACT both in English and Reading
   

Second Language Proficiency - Students must show proficiency in a World Language by meeting one of the following:

• Scoring 3 or higher on a AP World Language exam
• Obtaining a passing score on a CDE-approved language assessment

• Letters of Intent Open: October 1
• Letter of Intent Deadline: February 1
• Language Testing Window: February–May
• Notification of Recipients: April-July 
• Recognition - Senior Awards & Graduation

A Letter of Intent may be submitted to your school counselor from October 1st thru February 1st.  Students will need to:

1. Complete the Letter of Intent and Seal of Biliteracy Checklist
2. Submit required documentation and/or test scores
3. Take an approved language assessment and receive required score
