Administering Medications to Students (Policy JLCD) School personnel may only administer prescription or nonprescription medications if administration cannot reasonably be accomplished outside of school hours. Medication administration must be supervised by a School Nurse or their designee, who has trained and delegated the task to personnel.
Medication must be in the original, properly labeled container, and written permission from the parent/guardian is required. For prescription medication, written permission is also needed from the prescribing health care practitioner
Self-Administration of Medication: A student with asthma, severe allergies, or other life-threatening conditions may possess and self-administer medication during school hours, at school-sponsored activities, or in transit. This authorization may be limited or revoked by the principal if the student demonstrates an inability to responsibly possess and self-administer the medication.
Colorado law does allow responsible students to carry and self-administer their rescue inhaler and/or epinephrine auto-injector (C.R.S.22-1-119.5). In 2012, the law was extended to prescription medication. This law (C.R.S.22-1-119.3) allows the student to carry sufficient medication for a single day or for the duration of the event with approval of the provider, parent, and administrator. *self-carry contract needed* (CDE Medication Administration Guidelines - 2019).
Non-Compliance: Student possession, use, distribution, or sale of medication inconsistent with this policy will be considered a violation of the drug and alcohol policy and may subject the student to disciplinary consequences, including suspension and/or expulsion.

STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES REQUIREMENTS (Policy JLC/JLCB-R) School nursing staff maintains secure health records separate from other student data. Regular vision and hearing screenings occur for students in kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth grades. Students are required to provide immunization records upon registering, or they will not be allowed to enroll. Exemptions exist for health, religious, and personal reasons as provided by law.
